Working for a skydiving company offers fun, adventure and season hopping too

Broome is the perfect place for a winter warm-up, that’s why we’ve closed our Busselton drop zone (for the winter months) to take up skydiving on Cable Beach. And so far, working in Broome is awesome.

As a multi drop zone skydiving company, we have several year-round staff members who we rely on to deliver outstanding customer service and satisfaction. One such team player is Miss Jesse James.

Jesse re-located from Sydney to join our Rottnest Island office team last year and has never looked back.

Jesse recently packed up again to help out with our promotions and marketing in Broome for the winter. Let’s find out more about her and her journey into the world of skydiving.

How do you like living and working in Broome?

Broome is unlike anywhere I’ve ever been before. The people here are incredible and the scenery is stunning. I’m standing on Cable Beach at sunset and there are four-wheel drives and people having barbecues while I do this phone interview. It’s amazing.

Are there camels?

There were camels. They just went past.

How did you get a job with Skydive Geronimo?

I had just got back from California, where I was skydiving and travelling for 12 months. I was at home [in Sydney] looking for jobs online and came across Skydive Geronimo. I applied to work for the skydiving company and got a job offer for their manifest and customer service role. I moved to WA a few days later.

When did you first consider working for a skydiving company?

When I got into skydiving, I knew I would gravitate towards a career in the industry. When I came home from California and wanted to work, or needed to work after travelling for 12 months, I knew I wanted to work in skydiving. At that time, the past two years of my life were all about skydiving so it made sense. Western Australia appealed to me because I had never been here and I’m always keen to see a new part of the world.

Tell us about how you got into skydiving.

I once worked as a personal trainer for Royal Caribbean, a large cruise-line company. The ship I worked on had an iFly indoor skydiving tunnel. I learned how to fly there, so my first experience of flight was on a cruise ship in the middle of the Caribbean. I absolutely fell in love with it. I trained to become an instructor and applied for a job with iFly Downunder in Sydney. I got the job and after a few weeks working there, my co-workers suggested I come watch them skydive. I already knew I wanted to jump from planes so I booked myself a tandem skydive. Two weeks later, I started my AFF (accelerated free-fall) course and became a licensed skydiver. That was in January 2016. Now, I’ve done 399 solo jumps.

What tips do you have for someone who wants to work with a skydiving company?

You must be outgoing and positive. Anyone doing a tandem skydive will always remember that experience and as a skydiving company employee, you’ll be part of it so be sure to make it a positive and exciting time for them. Also, you don’t need to be a skydiver to work for a skydiving company. I’ve noticed a lot of people who work in skydiving aren’t skydivers. And some don’t want to be skydivers, but it’s a great job regardless. I love it and I love being a part of other people’s experiences.

What’s your favourite thing to do after work in Broome?

Camels on Cable Beach Broome at SunsetWatch the sunset at Cable Beach. It’s a classic thing to do here. Sunset barbecues after work are magic.
